Previously on my blog I matched books and/or book characters to Spyro Reignited realms and Disney princesses. I find it so enjoyable and nostalgic to match my hobbies/things I like from my childhood with books I'm loving now. It also gives me a chance to be a little more creative on the blog than just straight up reviews.
Pokémon (collecting cards and playing the video games) was a huge part of my childhood that I remember quite fondly. For this blog, I matched characters from books to specific Pokémon based on various interests/features of said characters and pocket monsters. Doing this blog gave me a chance to not only get nostalgic but also to learn about newer generations of Pokémon that I was unfamiliar with. I used a website called Bulbapedia for all the information and photos of the Pokémon you see here on this blog; think of it as a sort of real life Pokêdex. If you're, for whatever reason, interested in learning more about Pokémon then I'll link my source at the bottom of this blog.
I am very much open to doing another one of these Pokémon matching blogs in the future. However, I am currently working on a sequel to my Spyro Reignited book matching blog so that will come first (no promises on a date). What Pokémon would you match with these characters?
1. Briseis 'Bri' from This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron = Vileplume
Bri has magical powers when it comes to growing plants so she'd have no trouble evolving a little Oddish into a brilliant Vileplume. What's more, Bri is immune to poisonous plants that can harm and even kill other people. Vileplume emits poisonous pollen with every step it takes, so Bri might be one of the few that could nurture this plant-like Pokémon.
2. Kaz from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo = Honchkrow
Kaz is the ruthless leader of a notorious gang whose symbol is a crow. So, what would be a more ideal companion than a crow-like Pokémon known as a mob boss? I can picture Honchkrow posing intimidatingly on Kaz's shoulder and striking fear in the hearts of their enemies. They'd also have no trouble getting their underlings to do their bidding.
3. Matthias from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo = Glaceon
Matthias is a witch hunter and those in his profession keep wolves as company. There are wolf-like Pokémon, but none of them would be at home in Matthias' homeland of Fjerda (which is a frozen tundra). I knew I wanted an ice type for him and Glaceon, while not a wolf, is a fox/canid-like Pokémon who would not just survive but thrive alongside him in the cold kingdom.
4. Adrian from The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks by Mackenzi Lee = Dhelmise.
Adrian inherited a spyglass from a ghost ship from his mother and in his novel he finds himself tangled up with pirates (both alive and dead). Why not add to his collection of relics from sunken ships with Dhlemise? This Pokémon is actually possessed seaweed that has latched onto a sunken ship wheel. They could sail the seas together with Dhelmise defending Adrian from piracy.
5. Felicity Montague from The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee = Chansey
Adrian's sister gets her own Pokémon friend! Felicity is an intelligent feminist ahead of her time but that's not why I matched her with this particular Pokémon (though fun fact - Chanseys can only be female). Felicity is training to be a doctor and has proven herself on multiple occasions to be not only knowledgeable but competent in the field. Chansey is known to be a helper to Nurse Joy in the Pokémon world. I feel Felicity would keep one around to help her nurse her patients back to heath.
6. Lucifer from The House in the Cerulean Sea by T. J. Klune = Absol
Lucifer is, as his name implies, believed to be the 'anti-Christ' living at a magical orphanage. In reality, though, he's a sweet if somewhat mischievous child. Similarly, Absol is also misunderstood. It is believed to be a harbinger of disaster when really it's just trying to warn of impending disasters to save people. I think Lucifer and Absol would find solace in each other.
7. Hugo from The Whispering Door by T. J. Klune = Sinistea
Hugo has the ability to see ghosts and he runs a tea shop that serves as a way station for ghosts (for whom he is a guide). Sinistea, meanwhile, is a ghost Pokémon that has possessed an antique tea cup. This little lost soul would be well taken care of in the hands of this gentle tea shop owner. He'd just have to make sure no customers accidentally drank it (since then it would absorb that person's life force).
8. Rasmira from Warrior of the Wild by Tricia Levenseller = Kleavor
Rasmira is the only female warrior of her village. She wields an axe to kill the monsters that live in the forest that surround her home. Kleavor would be the perfect Pokémon for her because his arms have two axe like appendages that are perfect for slaying beasts alongside its master.
9. Shiori from Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim = Cubone
This princess is in quite the predicament in her book. She was cursed to have a bowl glued to her head. What's worse, she's stranded far from home without any family to rely on and she can't speak a word of else the curse will kill her brothers. Cubone, like Shiori, has a face that no one has seen (it wears its mother's skull - another thing they have in common is they both have no mom). He's the lonely Pokémon, but neither he nor Shiori would be lonely if they traveled together.
10. Anna from Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots = Rotom (as Rotom Dex)
Anna is a villain sidekick who works behind the scenes. She uses data and technology to track the unintentionally negative impact heroes have on the world. Rotom is a Pokémon capable of possessing appliances including a Pokédex. The Rotom Dex serves as a map, camera, and collector of data of encountered Pokémon. So, if Anna found herself in the world of these pocket monster she'd surely have one handy. Both also share a penchant for causing mischief, so the world would have to watch out if they teamed up!
