PLOT
This is the sixth installment in the Finlay Donovan series. In this book, Finlay travels to Maryland to help exonerate her best friend Vero who has bene accused of stealing money from her college sorority.
CHARACTERS
The novel includes a fusion of returning and new characters. The returning characters are Finlay, Vero, Finlay’s children Delia and Zach, Finlay’s boyfriend Nick, Vero’s cousin and boyfriend, Ramon and Javi, and teenage hacker Cam and his dog Arnold Schwarzenegger. I must give my thanks to Ms. Cosimano for not having Finlay’s ex-husband Steven in this novel. That was a welcomed surprise. While I do love Nick, he has also become too perfect of a boyfriend.
The new characters consist of figures from Vero’s college days including her sorority sisters Ava, Mia, and Zoey, and her friends Bennett, Jackson, and Theo who were part of a fraternity. There is also Vero’s mom, Norma, and her aunt Gloria.
I, of course, love the returning characters – they’re comfort character that I’ve grown attached to. However, I was particularly interested in the new characters because of the insight they offered into Vero’s past. In many ways, this story feels like it was a long time coming. The storyline has been referenced multiple times in past novels in the series. Among the new characters, my favorite was definitely Zoey. Cam develops a crush on her and, like Finlay, I feel a sort of maternal care for his character, so it was so cute to see his first love.
WRITING
The novel is told in Finlay’s 1st person perspective. Much like all the prior novels in the
series, this one is fast paced. These are fun, entertaining reads, with Finlay and Vero
experiencing constant hijinks and misadventures. I was super happy that this book was longer than the previous few have been, but the pages still flew by.
There is a plot twist in the novel that genuinely shocked me. The novel has a couple of cliffhangers at the very end as well. One of the two made my jaw drop. I can’t wait for the next installment! Side note: apparently, they’re making a Finlay Donovan TV series. I’m cautiously excited for it.
FINAL THOUGHTS
If you haven’t read this series yet, then what are you waiting for?? I recommend you don’t take these books too seriously and just have fun with them. This has become one of my favorite comfort series – I have never been bored or disappointed by any of these books!
